There are tons of small business owners out there that I talk to who have websites but don’t know what SEO stands for or what it is. These people have websites promoting their business. If you have a website and want traffic to it through search engines SEO is critical.
The people I talk to where made aware that you need a website today, and quickly went out and got one made up. They got their email address, printed new signage and advertising with their web address on it so their customers could ‘find them’. There website cost them a fortune and they had visions of loads more customers stumbling across their website, loving it and buying straight away. The problem with this is that it is old fashioned. It still requires your customers to see you advertisement in the same location. Sure some people will see your add and might be more likely to check out your site, but you still need them to see your add. You completion however are ranking in Google for buying keywords and making great sales.
Once upon a time a person turned to the Yellow Pages to find a service. If the a tap was leaking and they needed a plumber, they would flick through the index for plumbers then see 20 or 30 adds per page and choose based on the suburb. These days people type a few words in a search engine, look at the top three results then click to one of those sites. If you are selling this service and don’t appear on the top page, they don’t even see you.
So how do these pages get to page one based on keywords? This is why SEO is so important. SEO is all about helping search engines find your website. The two types are on-page SEO and off-page SEO. On-page SEO is about having the content of your website in a format that search engines like. Search engine ‘crawl’ your site and registers what it is about. If your page is all about landscaping the engines remember this and when someone searches landscaping it rates your site against other sites on the same topic. If your on-page SEO is better than your competitions you will rank higher.
Off-page SEO is all the work that takes place off your site telling the search engines about your site. This is done through a process of creating backlinks. Backlinks are links from other sites to your site and they tell Google and other search engines that they ‘like’ your site. The more ‘likes’ or links to your site the better your rankings.
There a many sites out there that claim to build millions of backlinks to your site quickly so that you rank sooner. Sure your site will rank, however the links will be on poor quality sites, hence the need for a lot of links, they will build them to fast, and Google will render the links as spam and disregard them. Your site will simply slip back down in rankings and you would have wasted your money and have to start again. You will probably find that the next time you do a SEO campaign it will cost you more as you will need more links to rank.
There is SEO formula that can be used to get Top Google Rankings.
